OES Providence Chapter Talk

August 10, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Talk by Dr. Son-Cheol Yu –

Wireless Robotic Buoy utilizing Oceanic wave and Image Sonar based Object Recognition for AUV

 Abstract:

This talk addresses two topics;

  1. Wireless Robotic Buoy: The proposed buoy has 3 representative functions: mooring-less station-keeping; a moving, submersible function in an emergency such as during a typhoon; and power generation using oceanic waves. For station-keeping and moving, the wave glider’s propulsion was used. For the generating of electric power, a novel wave turbine has been proposed and tested. It is shaped like a co-axial helicopter’s blades. The Robotic Buoy’s electrical generator blades were attached to the propulsion frame in a shape like a wind turbine. The oscillation of the surface wave generates the lift on each blade and the turbine is rotated. Two layers of turbine blades rotate in counter directions. The modeling, tank tests and sea-trials have been carried out.

  1. Recognition of Sonar Images for an AUV: DIDSON sonar based real-time object recognition methods are proposed. Element based techniques for the whole process of recognition, candidate searching, lock-on, approaching, and confirmation have been developed. Instead of a 2D image recognition approach, a beam slice based matching approach has been proposed for reliable detection requiring only modest computing power. A tank test and sea-trials have been carried out.
