Automatic Transfer Switches and Paralleling Switchgear

December 16, 2016 @ 9:00 am - 2:00 pm

Co-sponsored by: Ken Oexle

This presentation will cover the nine (9) common single lines for on-site power systems. First we will look at a basic ATS based system and cover: codes and standards, transfer switch selection, basic ground fault design, synchronizing, load sharing, system protection, and load shedding. Next we look will look at systems that use circuit breakers to transfer power.  We will discuss system design considerations and how the system configuration affects the sequence of operation.  Topics include: how to develop a detailed sequence of operation, utility intertie considerations, and load shedding.  We will also take an indepth look at controls and automation for paralleling switchgear.  We will look at the advantages and disadvantages of the different automation topologies (PLC layouts), discuss best practices for PLC programming, look at the different types of redundant control schemes that are commonly used and discuss the manual operation and what it really means.  Topics will include human factor considerations when specifying a control scheme, touch screen best practices, common control switches and what they are used for, metering and monitoring best practices and commissioning tips.

Speaker(s): Mike Pincus,
