Detecting Lies on the Internet

Social networks, chat rooms, blogs, and the Internet in general have a significant impact on the day-to-day activities of people. From WebMd to Amazon reviews to Facebook and Twitter, people have started to rely on the opinion of those that they have only met on the web. While this almost instantaneous access to information on diverse topics has advanced the reach of social events and movements as well spread of useful information, this medium has also been exploited for less than truthful purposes by some. For example, several cases of deception have been reported in sites like Craigslist. There have also been reported incidents of sexual predation on social networking web sites and Internet chat rooms. Deception via e-mails has been used for phishing critical information and there have also been reported cases of deceptive e-mails resulting in real-world physical harm. We will discuss our deception detection algorithms that are built using psycholinguistic cues and statistical models. We will also demonstrate our deception detection engine.
