Distribution Voltage Regulation Seminar – Parts 7 & 8

October 29, 2021 @ 09:00 - 11:00

NOTICE – This session will be paid for by the North Jersey Section PES as a courtesy to our members and prospective members during these challenging times of COVID-19. There will be no charge for participation and Continuing Education Unit credits.

This session is being offered as a GoToMeeting (details below).

The seminar will cover:

Distribution Voltage Regulation Series: Methods to Regulate the Voltage on the Distribution Grid

Introduction: This is a 10 – session presentation meant to assist engineers in designing the proper voltage regulation
architecture for the distribution grid. Each session takes approximately 45-50 minutes with a 10-15
minute period at the end for questions. The presentations should prove beneficial to technicians and
engineers responsible for distribution standards and design, distribution planning engineers, power
quality engineers as well as SCADA/ communications engineers. Below is a brief description of each
session.

Part 7) Voltage Reduction and Smart Voltage Reduction

This session covers voltage reduction schemes that have been in place for years mainly to allow for
emergency conditions when demand is greater than the generation supply. Next newer conservation
voltage reductions schemes are covered that allow for a reduction in demand over longer periods of
time. It also looks at the use of line drop compensation as a way of implementing CVR and finally
addresses how flipping the circuit provides for additional CVR improvements.

Part 8) Advanced Coordination

This session looks at flipping the circuit in greater detail by using advanced features in LTC/regulator
controls as well as capacitor controls. It covers using negative X and Var Bias as a way of coordinating
LTCs/Regulators with switched voltage controlled capacitor banks. It also looks at the auto-adaptive
feature of capacitor controls to maintain coordination even after FLISR, switching.

Speaker(s): Bob McFetridge,

Agenda:
Two hours of instruction will be provided.
