Special Presentation by Fan Liu (Washington U. in St. Louis, USA) Hosted by the Future Networks Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning (AIML) Working Group Date/Time: Thursday, 5 June 2025 @ 6 PM EDT Topic: Beyond the Buzz: What Large Language Models Actually Do (and Don’t Do) in Network Automation Abstract: Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly explored for automating network operations and management — from translating intents to generating device configurations. But how well do they actually perform? In this talk, I share insights from a recent survey at the intersection of LLMs and computer networking. Rather than covering every application, I focus on one of the most active areas: network automation. I will walk through representative use cases, highlight current limitations, and discuss what is still missing. The talk concludes with a short research roadmap and open questions for making LLM-based automation more trustworthy and practical in real-world networks. Speaker: [] Fan Liu is a second-year Ph.D. student in Computer Science at Washington University in St. Louis. Her research focuses on applying artificial intelligence to computer network operations and management, with an emphasis on large language models (LLMs). She is the first author of a recent survey on LLM applications in network operations, currently available as a preprint. Fan is also exploring LLM-driven approaches to automate incident response workflows. Her broader interests include using AI to enhance the infrastructure and applications of next-generation networks. Special Presentation by Dr. Harish Kumar Sahoo (VSSUT, India) Hosted by the Future Networks Massive MIMO Working Group Date/Time: Friday, June 6th, 2025 @ 11:00 am EDT Topic: Single Layer Neural Network Based Precoding and Equalization for 5G Communication System Abstract: Implementation of hybrid precoding in massive MIMO enhances the spectral efficiency of the receiver in 5G communication system. As hybrid precoding reduces the number of RF chains, the hardware complexity is comparatively less in presence of large number of antenna elements. Moreover, the optimal precoding matrix is helpful to develop efficient equalizer which improves the overall performance of the receiver. Functional link artificial Neural network (FLANN) and recurrent neural network (RNN) can be used as efficient machine learning (ML) models with appropriate training algorithms to generate optimal baseband precoding matrix at the transmitter. FLANN architecture is simpler which consists of a single layer and functional expansion block. Hybrid precoding matrix can be formulated by combining with RF precoding matrix. However, FLANN or RNN based optimization requires reference matrix to carry out the training process which updates the elements of the precoding matrix. Singular value decomposition (SVD) can be one of the approaches to generate the reference matrix through orthogonal decomposition of channel matrix. The research work is focussed on the performance of ML model based precoder for known channel state information (CSI) through simulation by analysing the spectral efficiency with a variation in number of base station (BS) antennas and users within a range of SNR values. Speaker: Dr. Harish Kumar Sahoo: Harish Kumar Sahoo is a senior member of IEEE. He is also a member of IEEE signal processing society, IEEE ComSoc and IEEE Future Networks. He is the current Chair of Technical and Educational Activity Committee IEEE Bhubaneswar Section. He completed his M.Tech from National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, India and Ph.D. from Sambalpur University, India. He is now working as Professor in the Department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology, Burla, Sambalpur, India. He has also additional responsibility of Dean Faculty and Planning of the University. He has more than twenty-four years of teaching and research experience. Six PhD. Scholars have already been awarded under his guidance. He has several research publications in the journals of IEEE, Elsevier, Springer, Wiley, Taylor and Francis. He is an active reviewer of journal articles for more than thirty-five international publishers including IEEE. His research interests include Massive MIMO, AI/ML Optimization in 5G and 6G communication networks, Channel Estimation and Equalization using adaptive estimation. Careers in Technology: Resume Writing Workshop with Professor Dr Dov Kruger, Rutgers University Profile Dov Kruger got his BE in Electrical Engineering, an MS in computer science and a PhD in Ocean Engineering, all from Stevens Institute of Technology, not continuously. He returned to become a professor in the ECE department at Stevens for 10 years before coming to Rutgers as a teaching associate professor. Dov is interested in high performance computing, re-engineering software to increase performance, and is working on a more efficient programming model for distributed and web programming, computer architecture features to enable more efficient programming, algorithms, 3d printing and computing education. Dov Kruger's research interests focus on high performance, high-security networking, re-engineering the web to be much faster by transmitting data in binary, explicit control of local data storage, and innovative data compression. Participatory AI is an approach to AI development that actively involves various stakeholders, including end-users, communities, and other relevant parties, in the design, development, and deployment processes of AI systems. This method emphasizes collaboration, transparency, and inclusivity to ensure that AI technologies are aligned with the values, needs, and expectations of the people who will be affected by them. Special Presentation by Dr. Marios Avgeris (U. of Amsterdam, the Netherlands) Hosted by the Future Networks Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning (AIML) Working Group Date/Time: Thursday, 19 June 2025 @ 12:00 UTC Topic: Networks for AI Abstract: As AI workloads become increasingly distributed, data-intensive, and latency-sensitive, the symbiotic relationship between networking and artificial intelligence is reshaping the design and operation of modern communication infrastructures. This talk explores the emerging paradigm of “Networks for AI”, where networks are no longer passive conduits but active enablers of scalable, secure, and efficient AI deployment. We will touch upon how AI augments network performance but mainly how modern network architectures are evolving to meet the stringent demands of AI training and inference. Emphasis will be placed on AI-native networking principles, high-performance fabrics for AI workloads, and in-network machine learning using programmable data planes. We also discuss key standardization efforts and recent research directions. Through this lens, the talk highlights how telecom and AI co-evolve to unlock new capabilities for both consumer and enterprise applications. Speaker: [] Marios Avgeris : I am currently holding an Assistant Professor position with the Informatics Institute (IvI) at the University of Amsterdam (UvA), carrying out work in the Multiscale Networked Systems (MNS) group. My research focuses in next-generation network management and orchestration, combining techniques from machine learning, and control theory. Specifically, I focus on designing intelligent, self-adaptive network architectures that leverage advanced AI techniques and/or rigorous control-theoretic principles to optimize performance and formally guarantee reliability. Recently, I have also been exploring the development of goal-oriented, semantic communication frameworks and the integration of generative AI to enable proactive network optimization, digital twinning, and zero-touch service management. I have received my diploma from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece, in 2016, and my PhD from the same department in 2021. All this time at NTUA I was embedded at the NETwork Management and Optimal DEsign (NETMODE) Lab. From 2022 to 2024, I was a Postdoctoral Fellow with the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering, Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada and the Software and Information Technology Engineering department at the École de Technologie Supérieure (ÉTS), Montreal, Canada. In parallel, I worked at Ericsson Canada. During that time, I was also awarded the CU-PSAC Postdoctoral Fellow Research Award. It's been noted that Section and Chapter Officers do NOT readily have an opportunity to meet other "like" Chapter Officers from other Sections to discuss creating such events. This Lunch Cruise is designed to do just that. We are planning Three Levels of Collabotation during our cruise time. Three Levels of Collaboration: Chapter Level - Chapter Officers of "like" chapters will create events that are cosponsored with "like" chapters of other Sections. Section Level - Section Officers of surrounding Sections will create events that are cosponsored with other Sections for a larger audience. Society Level - Societies look for new locations each year to host their Conferences. Sections bid for the honor to "host" them. It is similar to cities bidding to host the Olympics.
