5G NTN takes flight: 5G non-terrestrial networks evolving towards 6G

– Base stations in the air? Right from the beginning of digital mobile radio, the organizations developing mobile communications standards foresaw the possibility of satellite or airborne-based network components. At the time, non-terrestrial networks (NTN) went no further than an idea. Now, the combination of developments in satellite and aerospace technology and 5G advances in transmission technologies such as beamforming, can support reliable connections from mobile devices to stations in high altitudes.
