Cyber Security: Introduction, Legacy Devices, Ukraine & Privacy of information

June 8, 2017 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

The talk will begin with an introduction to cyber security:

  • Discussion on failure modes and effects analysis of security
  • Understanding the threat, and understanding the consequences and risks
  • Discussion on how to protect, detect and respond
  • Four levels of factors of authentication will be discussed
  • Summary of key points will end the introduction

Two cyber security case studies will be described:

  • A GE legacy device was found to be vulnerable to hacking. We’ll go through GE’s collaborative industry effort to address the vulnerabilities.
  • The Ukraine power outage will be discussed in detail. We will step through over 20 actions the hackers performed over a nine month period to prepare for the attack.

Lastly, we will discuss the need for privacy of information, review the Privacy by Design industry model, and see how GE operationalized the model by incorporating the model into Smart Grid hardware and software products deployed in a utility project.
