Distributed Energy Resources: Accommodation of Increased DER Penetration Strategies, System Impact Study Process and Equipment Design Considerations

July 20, 2017 @ 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Co-sponsored by: Maine Section

This technical meeting will cover the three dimensions to DER deployment.

1. Accommodation of Increased DER Penetration:

With the growing demand for Distributed Energy Resources (DER), technology platforms must accommodate the continual expansion and complexity of our systems.  This presentation will cover topics such as renewable generation, storage, and demand response as well as how our technology is evolving.

2. DER Interconnection Studies:

Interconnections of Distributed Energy Resources require compliance with IEEE 1547 and utility standards.  This presentation will cover the basics of a system impact study for a DER interconnection into a distribution feeder.  Topics will cover anti-islanding analysis, short circuit analysis, effective grounding, load flow, delta V, voltage flicker and interconnection design considerations.

3. Considerations for Distributed Generation Design:

While distributed generation (DG) is by no means a new phenomenon, recent years have seen a marked increase in the penetration of non-utility sources either feeding the Grid directly or reducing the portion of energy purchased from traditional electric utilities.  For example, as states implement various amounts of renewable portfolio standards (RPS), opportunities arise for independent producers to supply part of their energy needs and even supply energy to the electric utility market.  This talk looks at some aspects of electic power system design that are required to accommodate DG in light of typical Utility interconnect requirements, including modeling tools, protective device options, and the IEEE-1547 standard for interoperability with the Grid.

Speaker(s): Brian Conroy of Avangrid and Jon Gay of RLC Engineering, Rob Smith of Waldron Engineering and Construction
