Enabling the IoT/IIoT with Energy Harvesting

November 3, 2022 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

The many billions (perhaps even 1 T depending on how one is counting) of tiny power devices currently
being deployed for everything from conditional monitoring to making your toaster intelligent comprises
what is referred to as the Internet of Things / Industrial Internet of Things (IoT / IIoT). Most of these
wireless sensor networks (WSN) derive their power from batteries and even worse, from primary (non-
rechargeable) sources. These tiny system power budgets can be supplemented, and perhaps even
completely sourced, from ambient energy scavenging, also known as energy harvesting (EH).
This talk shall review the fundamentals of EH, discuss some of the tradeoffs with implementation, reveal
some universal design philosophies, and tie all these factors into design optimization
strategies/techniques in several, common use cases. Additionally, there will be discussion on common
misperceptions around EH (e.g. – negligible power, too expensive, no production ecosystem, etc.) and
how these factors are weighed against common, critical design requirements.
