Evolution of Electronics and Informatics In Medical Imaging: A Journey from 1900 to Today

December 14, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Since Wilhelm Roentgen discovered X-Rays in 1895, medical imaging has undergone several revolutions. Initially, and for decades, photographic film was a capture, storage, distribution, and archival medium. This continued until the early 1990s when Digital images were rendered onto film using multiformat cameras and radiographic laser printers. Electronic displays did not have sufficient resolution as well as dynamic range. The growth of digital modalities, both 2D as well as 3D necessitated interoperability and the ability to view and process images remotely, as well as archive them electronically, as storage became inexpensive.

This talk will chart the evolution of electronics and informatics from the time of Roentgen until the present day and will also discuss some of the hurdles that had to be conquered in order for these technologies to be accepted by the medical imaging community.
