Understanding how cable systems fail is one of the key elements to ensure reliability. Insight into empirical evidence and lessons learned after profiling over 110 million feet of installed 5kV to 500kV class cable systems will debunk some common theories and myths associated with solid dielectric cable failure. This insight has triggered a revolutionary life-cycle approach to cable system reliability that provides clear direction on product selection, system design, installation practices, commissioning, system operation, assessment of aging infrastructure, and repair and replacement strategies. Implementation of this new paradigm across multiple large-scale programs has demonstrated dramatic reliability improvements at substantially lower costs than legacy approaches.
