IEEE SIGHT Planning Session — Virtual Seminar ‘Health & Medical Device Literacy’
December 6, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm
Planning Session for Our Virtual Seminars will reach Students, Teachers, and Volunteers to introduce the Humanitarian Activities Committee Special Interest Group for Humanitarian Technologies (SIGHT) Group project: ‘Health & Medical Device Literacy.’
The Virtual Seminar Series presented by Professional Engineers will cover topics significant to Health & Medical Device Literacy, to achieve Transparent Design for Well-being, which is an IEEE Dignity Inclusion Identity Trust and Agency (DIITA) Global Workflow. In particular, how does IEEE Advance Technology for Humanity by viewing the issues through a Humanitarian lens which can improve opportunities for Transparent Design for Well-being. Solutions are multidimensional engaging many interests and involve not only Engineering, but also Medicine, Social Determinants of Health, as well as Cultural and Linguistic influences.
Engineers will describe how everyday Medical Devices are designed and used, how they relate to managing health for an individual or as a caregiver for a loved one, the role of culture and language in health and well-being, how to beome involved and how to learn more.

Background of the IEEE NJ Coast Section SIGHT Group Project:
‘Do Good Things Health and Justice for All’, is a NJ Coast Section/ R1 (with international collaborators)
COVID-19 inclusion & accessibility Pilot solution connecting people to improve Health & Medical Device
literacy. Needs: People must monitor & care for themselves & family at home, with telehealth, in clinic, for
chronic, acute & emergency health conditions. Envisioned Solutions: Easy to use Medical Device guides, w Languages,
expanded Lexicon/vocabulary, Closed Captioning (CC), screen readers, etc. Information and
Communications Technology (ICT) to connect to Medical Devices. UN SDGs 3, 4 & 10 during a global
pandemic. Envisioned system solution connects people quickly to Medical Device user guides, related health condition, literacy materials
Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Systems CLAS-HHS to improve health literacy. Training for Community
of Interest (CoI): patients, caregivers, disabled, those with preexisting conditions, ambulance corps, first
responders, stakeholders, standards volunteers, trainees, healthcare professionals, during telemedicine
session, etc. Pilot will demonstrate methods connecting medical devices (thermometer, bp cuff, pulse ox, scale, glucose
meter, etc.) using a simple technology solution, machine/ human readable code GUDID & database with user
instructions, health condition monitoring, and emergency procedure, by levels of literacy, English, Spanish,
CC, & Blind Screen Reader. Community Lived Experience Profiles Storytelling, Lexicon Standards &
collaborations to reduce Bias in data & algorithms, to improve healthcare for minorities, underrepresented,
women, children, etc. Connects People & Medical Devices to Internet of Things (IoT). Online open access Pilot
includes multimedia Seminars in English, Spanish, Closed Captioning, Blind Screen Reader, Events: Seminar –
