Title: Implementing IEEE 802.11ad standard’s Golay sequences and modulation schemes in the Terahertz band

Abstract:
Almost all of current wireless communications operate below 6 GHz (sub-6 GHz) leading to congested spectrum bands and a need to find new areas of the
spectrum to support future high-speed, high-bandwidth technologies. The Terahertz (THz) band (100GHz – 10THz) has the potential to fill this need, however, early research indicates that waveforms designed for sub-6 GHz may not be suitable for THz frequencies. In this project, we investigate 802.11ad standard, designed specifically for millimeter-wave band at 60 GHz, due to its similarities in channel properties with THz band. We developed and tested 802.11ad waveform’s packet structure, the use of Golay sequences, and different modulation schemes. Control packet and single-carrier packet structures are created and tested at 140 GHz carrier frequency at AFRL Wireless Innovations at Spectrum Edge (WISE) laboratory at Innovare Advancement Center. We present preliminary experimental results on Golay sequences and different modulation schemes using the collected over-the-air data at THz frequencies.

Bio:
Richard Yerger a senior at SUNY Polytechnic Institute expected to graduate in May 2023 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering with a minor in mathematics. After graduation, he plans to continue research in advanced communications, signal processing and networking. Richard is currently serving as the president of IEEE Club at SUNY Poly.
