Scaling the 5G Edgeless Fog – New Frontiers in Communications Technology for New Economies

July 15, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

An electronic device intended for use in a specific geographic region has historically been assigned a fixed frequency band and power level in accordance with federal regulatory standards imposed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for civilian/ commercial uses or the National Telecommunications Information Agency (NTIA) for military use. The investigators will provide an overview of emerging dynamic spectrum access/sharing (DSA/S) systems designed to work with 5G cellular and adaptable to future 6G and Next-G technologies. Leveraging embedded software that can be ported to semiconductor chip sets, DSA/S systems can increase communications and network capacity more than 100-fold by pushing data transactions to the edge where users and devices operate while eliminating dependence on the Internet or large cell towers for connectivity. DSA/S systems, with use of embedded software, customized chip sets, and software defined radio (SDR) policy deployments facilitate multiple independent or private broadband networks that do not require the Internet or cell carrier services. This network of networks solution can tie together users across multiple smart city domains including but not limited to drone flight management, telehealth, emergency management, eCommerce, content delivery, autonomous vehicle control, and fill gaps in rural/underserved areas. DSA/S systems can provide autonomous frequency assignments to the radios and generate policies that enable them to outperform legacy systems and support other functions such as spectrum mapping, signal classification, automated radio checks, health and status, automated lost communications restoration, and many other end-user tasks. 5G Standards in support of DSA/S technologies are discussed, including IEEE 1900.5 which defines a vendor-independent policy language for managing the functionality and behavior of dynamic spectrum access networks, and a generalized method for modeling spectrum consumption of any type of RF spectrum use. Concepts for IC packaging and system on a chip (smart chip) designs will take into account how the semiconductor and board real estate can be configured to include AI and machine learning capabilities to enable any radio device using smart chips for real-time functionality and performance.
