Sunrise Wind Offshore Windfarm – New York – Overview of HVDC Interconnection

June 16, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) systems have been in operation around the world for decades. HVDC has historically been used for bulk, long distance power transfer, however with advances in technology and application it is now a key tool in transitioning the transmission system to accommodate increasing onshore and offshore renewable resources. This presentation will focus primarily on various technologies available for offshore projects and pick up the one applied for Sunrise Wind.

Sunrise Wind is an 880 MW offshore wind farm with the potential capacity to power nearly 600,000 New York homes. The project is being developed and built by a 50/50 partnership between Ørsted and Eversource. We are currently planning for Sunrise Wind to be fully operational in 2025. Sunrise Wind is located at least 30 miles east of Montauk Point on Long Island, NY, virtually unnoticeable to Long Island residents and beachgoers. Sunrise Wind will provide residents with 100% renewable energy to help New York accomplish a carbon-free energy grid by 2040.
