SVC/STATCOM Design Fundamentals

The US transmission grid is a robust, complex yet delicate system that requires a lot of planning, maintenance, and finesse to keep at peak operation. The changes in the country’s generation platforms along with changes to the load levels over the years has increased the need for support from devices in the Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) family like Static Var Compensators (SVC) and Static Synchronous Compensators (STATCOM). These power electronic based systems provide fast acting repeatable support to the transmission grid during times when the grid is stressed to its limits. This presentation will focus on the components that make up SVC’s and STATCOM’s along with the various design aspects and considerations necessary for a successful installation.
