Modern RF/ Optical Delay Line Technologies, Configurations and Applications

October 6, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 12:30 pm

Microwave Optical Delay lines are increasingly being deployed to facilitate the design, development, and testing of advanced RADAR, LIDAR, EW/ECM/ECCM, and next-generation Communication systems. In this paper, we investigate the current industry trends, technological design approaches, and system trade-offs. We also contrast the differences between RF coax delay lines with optical delay lines and hybrid coax / optical fiber devices. These delay line topologies address time delay requirements from 0.25ps to over 5ms and support RF frequencies from DC to 67+ GHz. A wide array of technologies have been used to support current delay line requirements and the specification process can be overwhelming to the system designer. We attempt to summarize the major delay line technologies available, highlight the advantages and disadvantages of each technology and address the SWAP-C implications of each approach. Specific attention is given to sub-microsecond switched hybrid RF /optical delay lines and the impacts of environmental variations on the performance and long-term reliability of these devices. An understanding of these technological trade-offs underlying these delay lines will assist the system designer.
