Guest Lecture Focus Self-driving cars have been a dream from almost the time the automobile was invented. With the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), this dream has seemingly become reality with driverless commercial operations already taking place in a handful of cities around the world. However, the recent tragic accident involving a pedestrian and a Cruise self-driving car, as well as a number of high-profile Tesla crashes, raise the possibility that such systems may not actually be as capable as envisioned, and questions have arisen about their safety both nationally and internationally. Given these concerns, it is important to step back and analyze both the actual safety records of these vehicles and just why AI is struggling to operate safely under all conditions in autonomous vehicles. This lecture will highlight the strengths and weaknesses of AI in self-driving cars, as well as in all safety-critical applications, and lay out a roadmap for safe integration of these technologies on public roadways. Guest Lecture Focus Innovations in robotics are now present in many aspects of human endeavour, from robotic vacuum cleaners to autonomous battlefield drone swarms. Alongside the intended effects of these innovations are some emerging, unintended adverse consequences. Legal and political processes exist in part to prevent and mitigate such harms. This presentation offers a systematic analysis of the emerging routes by which applications of embodied artificial intelligence—robotics—elicit public policy responses. It develops a typology that classifies robotics applications according to how they interact with individual humans, large-scale human populations, and specific physical settings; and whether the robots operate alone, in swarms, or in integrated cyberenvironments. Each case interacts with public policymaking processes in different ways, spanning tort liability law, regulatory codes and standards, and policies for assessing and managing risk. Clear roles emerge for voluntary standards, international collaboration among governance bodies, professionals cross-trained in robotics and public policy, and institutions that effectively anticipate emerging problems. Is AI the New Plastic?
Is AI the New Plastic?
Special Presentation by N. Kishor Narang (Narnix Technolabs, India) Hosted by the Future Networks Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning (AIML) Working Group Date/Time: Thursday, May 16th, 2024 @ 12:00 UTC Topic: Is AI the New Plastic? Meta-Analysis of Sustainability as an Ethical imperative for Digital Technologies Abstract: This talk provides a meta-analysis of the environmental policy challenges presented by emerging technologies collectively referred to as machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI). The emergence of these technologies has already begun profoundly reshaping our lives, our interactions, and our lived environments. As adoption of these technologies becomes widespread, they are likely to play a substantial independent role in society’s energy consumption and environmental impact. In this talk, we argue that AI poses collective challenges like the widespread introduction of plastics half a century ago - providing cheap and seemingly efficient solutions to a wide range of contemporary problems while creating (and displacing) new aggregate costs that will impact all of society. This talk proposes that a holistic ethical and policy approach should be taken towards the design and deployment of AI technologies. It should embed an awareness of key ethical and policy goals throughout the ecosystem and value chain - from researchers to engineers to corporations to global policymakers - to better generate and distribute metrics that can inform policies oriented towards ethical and sustainable practices. If available, any slides/recordings will be at https://futurenetworks.ieee.org/roadmap/aiml-working-group Co-sponsored by: IEEE Future Networks Speaker(s): N.
