Special Presentation by Ngo Thi Huyen Minh, co-founder and General director of Will to Live Part of the Future Networks Monthly Webinar Series Date/Time: Wednesday, 19 March 2025 @ 11:00AM ET Topic: Empowering Women Leaders in Challenging Times Abstract: This talk celebrates the accomplishments that women have made in the lives of others through empowering them through technology. We provide comprehensive support for people with disability. The Will to Live Center (WLC) is a nonprofit, based in Hanoi, Vietnam, that provides free computer and life skills training courses, to people with disabilities, in order to help them find employment and integrate fully into society. The WLC, also runs several social initiatives with the goal of ending the discrimination and stigma that people with disabilities face, on a daily basis. The Will to Live Center supports and assists people with disabilities, to integrate completely into society, through employment services and social initiatives. Our vision is to support people living with disabilities and provide them with technology and life skills, to ensure equal opportunities and access in the technical field and society as whole. With more than 15 years work with people with disabilities and over 10 years of experience in Human resource and management. I started up this business in order to establish an inclusive study and working environment for the disabled, especially disabled women. Because I am convinced that education helps PWDs to find employment and generate an income. I believe the best workplace for PwDs is where they feel like their home, where they can receive personalized and continual care from their extended family members; especially for PwDs with mobility issues, working from home provides immense savings in time and cost in transporting in Vietnam's congested traffic. It is such a rough journey that I saw how computers, technology and the internet really changed their lives. They have jobs, more friends and they really touched the world with their finger! even by their toes as some of them have to use the keyboard by feet instead of hands! We have trained more than 1500 people with disabilities and more than 70% of them now are having decent jobs. Since the start we committed to keep the staff with at least 40% PWDs (now more than 50%). And all the shareholders committed their support in sustainable inclusion by contributing their profit each to fund for vocational training for PWDs and disadvantaged groups and the philanthropic work in the country. Special Presentation by Dr. Lina Mohjazi & Dr. Yao Sun (U. of Glasgow, UK) Hosted by the Future Networks Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning (AIML) Working Group Date/Time: Thursday, 20 March 2025 @ 12:00 UTC Topic: The Meaning Behind the Signal: How Semantics are Transforming Wireless Communications Abstract: Semantic communication (SemCom) has recently emerged as a transformative paradigm, prioritizing accurate reception of message meaning over mere bits. The core concept is to empower wireless transceivers with reasoning and causality. In this talk, we will start with the basics of SemCom. Then some design challenges on both link level and network level will be introduced. We will later discuss several technical works on resource management in SemCom networks. Finally, some potential applications of SemCom will be presented. Speaker: [] Lina Mohjazi is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) at James Watt School of Engineering, University of Glasgow (UofG), UK. She received the Ph.D. degree in electrical and electronic engineering from the prestigious 5G/6G Innovation Centre, University of Surrey, Guildford, U.K., in 2018. She has co-authored more than 80 research papers in international high-impact journals and highly-rated conferences as well as book chapters. Her research interests include green and sustainable wireless communications, IoT’s, machine learning, energy efficiency, fundamental performance limits, and beyond 5G/6G and its applications. She is Deputy Director of the Robotics AI for NetZero (RAINZ) Centre for Doctoral Training at UofG. Dr. Mohjazi is the Women in Engineering Engagement Lead at the IEEE Communication Society UK&I. She is Fellow of Women's Engineering Society (WES) and a Senior Member of the IEEE. She served as Associate Editor for the IEEE Communications Letters (received the Exemplary Editor Award 2023). Dr. Mohjazi was endorsed as ”Global Talent” by the Royal Academy of Engineering in the UK in 2020, and as a “High Level Foreign Talent” by the Chinese Government in 2023. She was also the recipient of multiple teaching awards, the IEEE GPECOM 2022 best paper presentation award, and the IEEE Women in Engineering UK&I Engineering Excellence award. She is an Affiliate Member of Mohammed Bin Rashid Academy of Scientists, UAE. Yao Sun is currently a Lecturer with James Watt School of Engineering, the University of Glasgow, Glasgow, UK. Dr. Sun has extensive research experience and has published widely in wireless networking research. He has won the IEEE Communication Society of TAOS Best Paper Award in 2019 ICC, IEEE IoT Journal Best Paper Award 2022, IEEE Transactions on Service Computing Best Paper Award 2023, and Best Paper Award in 22nd ICCT. He has been the guest editor for special issues of several international journals. He has served as TPC Chair for UCET 2021, the symposium chair for VTC 2024 Spring, and TPC member for a number of international flagship conferences, including ICC, GLOBECOM, WCNC. His research interests include intelligent wireless networking, semantic communications, blockchain system, and resource management in next generation mobile networks. Students and women in STEM from across New Jersey will join together to share research, engage in professional development, share experience, and build community. Attendees will participate in workshops designed to enhance key professional skills, covering topics such as building mentorship networks, fostering intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and exploring diverse career opportunities in teaching, academia, industry, and beyond. This event aims to foster community, amplify the voices of women in STEM, and equip participants with tools to navigate and thrive in their academic and professional journeys. We are Looking for 10-15 judges Judges can be University students, Young Professionals, IEEE members, Senior Members, Life Members, Fellows What is TNJSF? The TNJSF (formerly the NJRSF) is a science fair competition for high school students (grades 9-12) for students in ten counties of northern New Jersey. The mission of the TNJSF is to support, encourage, and recognize student involvement in scientific researh and engineering design. It is our belief that students can only truly appreciate the creative nature of the process if they have actually experienced it themselves. In addition, we endeavor to provide resources which further this overarching goal, including giving students various opportunities to interact with professional scientists and engineers. The opportunity to partake of the TNJSF itself as well as other resources we offer is intended to be open to all high school students in our northern NJ region. IEEE volunteers are needed for Special Awards Judging at the Fair Special awards judging takes place on Sunday morning. Judges are asked to arrive at the judges' room by 9:15 a.m. to determine their project assignments with their team and to receive instructions from the Judging Coordinator. Judging of projects takes place from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. During this time, judges will meet with students at their project displays and evaluate their work. At least 2 judges on the award team should see each project under consideration. At 12:00 p.m., the judges reconvene in the judges' room to discuss the projects and determine which projects will be awarded. Judging of special awards is usually completed by 1:00 p.m. Volunteers use the registration link in vTools so we have your email logged.
